Hi Suzanne, The author of this tutorial didn't include any text or info about clay but just about any air dry clay would do, as long as it didn't crack when dry. I'd use a lightweight clay like Delight or Makin's Clay or Model Magic. I'd also use a glossy top coat, either brush-on or spray-on. A product made to top coat clay (Sculpey) or wood (tole painting).should work OK.
